SAFE ACL™ VIDEO

What is SAFE ACL and what do its four letters stand for?

SAFE ACL stands for four treatment goals: Safer, ACL fit for you, Faster and Effective. It is an ACL treatment-planning approach, not four different operations, in which your injury, your whole knee, your lifestyle and your recovery goal are looked at together. Dr Sankalp Pande explains that these four goals aim to reduce the risk of re-injury and help you restart your routine activities in a safer way.

Video in Hinglish (Hindi–English), 3:58 min. YouTube title: “SAFE ACL Kya Hai? ACL Surgery के 4 Goals: S, A, F, E”. Watch on YouTube

Key points from the video

  • Safer: treatment is planned only after a thorough check-up of the whole knee – meniscus, cartilage and other ligaments – not just the ACL tear.
  • Which graft, which technique and whether any additional procedure is needed should each have a clear reason, with the aim of reducing the risk of re-injury.
  • ACL fit for you: the plan follows your age, weight, occupation, lifestyle and goal – sport, gym, long drives, site work or daily routine.
  • Faster: planning to bring you back to daily routine activities as early as possible, but in a safer way, without unnecessary delay.
  • When you walk, use stairs, drive, return to work or restart gym or sport is decided by your surgery, knee condition and recovery, not time alone.
  • Effective: the aim is to improve knee stability, movement and ability to work, and you should be told why a particular treatment was recommended.
  • These are not four different operations but one complete approach to planning treatment.

Questions patients ask

What does SAFE stand for in SAFE ACL?

S stands for Safer, A for ACL fit for you, F for Faster and E for Effective. Dr Pande says SAFE ACL is not just a name: behind every letter there is a clear treatment goal.

Is SAFE ACL a type of operation?

No. He explains that these are not four different operations. SAFE ACL is one complete approach to planning treatment, in which your injury, your whole knee, your lifestyle and your recovery goal are all looked at together.

What does 'Faster' mean in SAFE ACL?

It means planning to bring you back to daily routine activities as early as possible, but in a safer way. Decisions such as when to walk, drive or restart gym or sport are made by your surgery, knee condition and recovery, not time alone.

Why is the whole knee checked, not just the ACL tear?

Under 'Safer', he explains that looking at the ACL tear alone is not enough. The meniscus, cartilage and other ligaments need to be understood too, so that the choice of graft, technique and any additional procedure has a clear reason.

What does SAFE stand for in SAFE ACL? Whenever you hear SAFE ACL, please remember its 4 words: S – Safer, A – ACL fit for you, F – Faster, E – Effective. Hello friends, my name is Dr Sankalp Pande, and I am a SAFE ACL surgeon. Today we will understand why these 4 goals of SAFE ACL are important for your treatment.

The first one is: S for Safer. Safer means treatment should be planned only after a thorough check-up. Just looking at the ACL tear is not enough, the condition of the meniscus, the condition of the cartilage, the other ligaments, and understanding the whole knee is necessary. Which graft to choose, which technique to use, is any additional procedure needed as well? There should be a clear reason for all these decisions. The goal of this planning is to reduce the risk of re-injury.

A – ACL fit for you. Every patient's age, weight, occupation and lifestyle are different, and every patient's problem is different too. Someone wants to go back to sports, someone wants to rejoin the gym, someone wants to go on a long drive, someone has to work on site, and someone's goal is to do their daily routine activities comfortably. That is why the treatment plan should be according to your requirement. This is what ACL fit for you means.

F for Faster. Faster means planning to bring you back to your daily routine activities as early as possible, but in a safer way. When will you start walking, when will you use stairs, when will you start driving again? When will you be able to go back to your job? When can you restart the gym or sports?

These decisions should not be made by time alone, they should be made according to your surgery, your knee's condition and recovery. The goal of correct surgical planning, early rehabilitation and a clear recovery plan is that, without unnecessary delay, you can restart your routine activities in a safer way. This is F for Faster.

4th – E for Effective. The goal of effective treatment is to improve knee stability, movement and the ability to work. The patient should be able to return safely to routine, activities, job, gym or sports, and the patient should also be told why a particular treatment was recommended.

These 4 goals of SAFE ACL are to reduce the risk of re-injury. Safer makes your recovery safe, ACL fit for you is according to your requirement, Faster is to get back to your daily routine activities as early as possible, Effective is for your knee's normal stability, movement and function, so that you can rejoin your daily activities. These are not 4 different operations, this is one complete approach to planning treatment, in which your injury, your whole knee, your lifestyle and your recovery goal are all looked at together.

That is why SAFE ACL is not just a name, behind every letter of it there is a clear treatment goal: S – Safer, A – ACL fit for you, F – Faster, E – Effective. Please remember this word: SAFE ACL.
